Summer Komikon Is Back in 2024

The last time I attended Summer Komikon was in 2019 at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig. So, I am happy to see it return to the convention scene on May 25 and 26 at SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 3. The event will be celebrated from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on both days. This is the longest-running Filipino comics convention here in the Philippines. If Summer Komikon is back, then the local comic book scene is running on all cylinders once again.

“The pandemic never stopped people from making comics,” shared Sherry Lee Baet Zamar during the Summer Komikon presscon held last Saturday, May 18 via Zoom. In fact, the pandemic made Filipino comics more accessible online, and it was only the in-person events that stopped. Well now, we don’t need to worry about the lack of Filipino comic book conventions with the return of Summer Komikon this year.

Summer Komikon Online Presscon

So what are we to expect with this year’s iteration of Summer Komikon? First, we have a couple of artists spotlight spread out on two days. On May 25 we have Ace Enriquez at 1:00 PM, and Gab Chee Kee at 4:30 PM. While on May 26, we have Ed Padilla at 1:00 PM, and Russell Molina at 4:30 PM. Next, we have interactive games, a staple of Komikon, throughout the two day event to engage the audience in anything, and everthing comics. Also, there will be an awarding of the previously announced “Comic Creation Contest: A Philippine Isekai” at 3:00 PM on May 25. Of course, what would the event be without the presence of local comic book creators sharing their wares in the event grounds? This is your chance to meet and greet Filipino comic book creators, interact with them, get original art, and, yes—comics.

The Last Summer Komikon in 2019

For years, Summer Komikon has been a Mecca of all things Filipino Comics. Don’t wait another five years to start your pilgrimage to Filipino comics holy ground. Come join in welcoming Summer Komikon back from the other side of the pandemic. Hope to see you there.
